An overcast day did not offer the most desirable condition for a snowshoe trip, not to mention photography. Nevertheless we started towards the Grosser Knallstein, a 2,599 m peak in the Soelk Valleys of the Austrian Alps. What else should we do in the beautiful, but small village of St Nikolai? Without proper sight above the tree line we decided to turn around, when on our way back home the clouds suddenly parted in favor of a deep-blue evening sky. The white line is not a scratch or some awkward illusion. Even if the landscape looks wild and untouched, numerous airplanes mark the sky with white trails. There are only a few places without traces of human civilization left on this planet. Taken during our 2003/2004 New Year vacation to St Nikolai, Niedere Tauern, Austria.
